on the first day of 2011 (1/1/11) i had the huge privilege of photographing

On 01/01/2011 Angelique and Brent Witcher were married at the Proximity hotel in Greensboro NC. I was sought out to shoot this wedding due to an old friendship that spanned all the way back to 6th grade. Angelique and I along with the majority of the bridesmaids all went to middle school together, so I guess you could say it was somewhat of a reunion as well as a wedding for me. Being around such good people and old friends hardly felt like work. Thanks so much to Fredda McDonald (wedding coordinator) for a truly amazing job. Congratulations Angelique & Brent. You two truly are an amazing couple.

Phantogram

Last year I went to see a show at the Local 506 in Chapel Hill. I was going to see a band called "School of Seven Bells", which I had been very interested in for quite sometime. While having a beer and anxiously awaiting the performance I noticed what seemed to be two very hip looking people setting up for the next band. What came next was highly unexpected and ended up being one of those AHHH HAAA moments where you feel like you stumbled upon buried treasure or something. My assumption of the two people setting up was oh so very wrong. The band was called Phantogram, and consisted of Sarah and Josh from Saratoga Springs, New York. As I began to listen I could not help but fall in love with the contrast of dark base with an uplifting undertone of keyboards and guitar that was amplified my Sarah's vocals. It's hard to explain their talent and obvious skill that sets them apart from everything else in so many ways. All I can say is that when boundaries are broken you feel it, and I difinitely felt it. This past Tuesday Phantogram came back to NC after touring with School of Seven Bells overseas and played at the Cats Cradle. Their popularity has grown, which doesn't surprise me at all. I see them making very big waves in the near future and highly suggest giving them a solid listen. Come check them out here - (Phantogram).

Not to long ago I had the pleasure of photographing a guy by the name of Luke Gunn. After talking to Luke for awhile I came across some of his well developed talents. Some of which I had only seen on youtube. Its called PARKOUR!!! Parkour is running, jumping off buildings, I don't even know whats going on type of sport that was amazing to see first hand. A few months ago my girlfriend and I decided to go have a drink at the Flatiron in Greensboro to catch up with some old friends. I'm what you might call a music snob that is rarely struck with something that grabs and holds my attention, but The Old One Two was that attention grabber I had been looking for for quiet some time. We went to the bar that night to mingle with friends but I don't think I said more than a few words the entire night. The Old One Two is the best two tapping, get out of your chair and scream bands I have heard in a long long time. The band has an old time blues meets rock and roll feel that I have only experienced on vinyl. Nathan, Hawk, and Chad are the guys behind the soul. This past weekend I had the privileged of photographing Sarah and Mark. They are to be married in Charleston South Carolina later this year. We met up in the mountains and had a killer afternoon of perfect weather. As the light faded we found this great pasture with a epic mountain as a back drop. What a trip!

In the early months of spring my girl and I made our first road trip to a little place called Disney World. I mentioned that we would be traveling through Florida to my boss and he jumped at the chance to tell me of a place where you could snorkel, dive, and tube in crystal clear fresh water. A place called Ginnie Springs. In and around Gainesville Florida natural springs pump out beautiful clear 72 degree water that is perfect for swimming and photos. I highly suggest it!

A few years ago My friend Joey Booth and Tyler Nance and I went on a canoe trip down the Dan river. We found a large sand bar to set up camp on and began making a shelter.
I think we knew it was going to rain, just how much was soon to be revealed. The storm was nothing to laugh about. I broke out my favorite camera and began to capture moments that would be remembered for the rest of our lives.

Viewing the film developed so long after the trip made me realize how important the moments we spend with the ones we love are.

A long time coming is a shoot I have been thinking about for a while now. Even though the weather was not cooperating we made it work. Hair and makeup was done by Angela Kelsick who is a stylist at Chakras downtown and just so happens to lives beside me. We were both blessed with the fun and ever beautiful Jenny Kreiger as our model who works for Directions Agency in Greensboro. Our on location shots were taken at a farm I have been admiring for along time now. Much Thanks to the care taker, Michelle Lassiter. It was a fun time.

I'm sure everyone remembers being young and coming home from school to a after school snack. Well when I got the chance I would make my own. For most this might consist of peanut butter and crackers, or a fruit roll up. My favorite snack however was cut up lemons and limes with the skin still attached. I would sit down in front of the TV and methodically peel the sour fruit from its skin, put the whole piece in my mouth and pucker to it's tart goodness. This was real bad for my teeth so rest assured my mom put an end to my sour addiction the second she found out. To this day though I love eating lemons and limes.

Carrots contain what is called carotene. our body's break this down during metabolism and convert it into vitamin A. Being a photographer good vision is my biggest asset. I am so thankful that I have good vision, and since I have it I thought I would use it to take some detailed photos of carrots. I find myself realizing what I love about these foods while I'm shooting them. This stuff is hardly planned. I usually go to the store and see something colorful and like a kid in a candy shop I get excited as ideas flutter in my head. It's not till during the shoot that I step back and realize how great and beneficial these foods are to us. So I plan on exploring this until I have shot every food there is.

In the photo with the eye chart look carefully, they are not just randomly picked letters. Hope your eye sight is good, and if it's not, eat a carrot.

Yesterday I went out to a produce market looking for vegetables that grow under ground. You know, potato's, beets, carrots, and I came across Radishes. I realized that these are really unique vegetables. They have the look of a small turnip but taste nothing like any vegetable I have ever eaten. They say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, well if the radish did fall from a tree it wouldn't fall anywhere in sight. So here's to you radish for being the vegetable that only really gets eaten on a salad with lots of ranch.

OK, so I have a sever addiction to that little thing that makes everything taste so much better, Garlic. To most my addiction is a pretty big problem, considering my breath after a garlic and mushroom pizza. I couldn't care less though, there is nothing and nobody that could drag me away from this stinky affair. Hats off to you garlic for making every other food that much better.

Oranges are so great. I know every time I feel like I'm getting sick the first thing that comes to mind is a large glass of orange juice. Vitamin C is my hero during these crazy transitions of seasons. So here's to you orange juice and all your powerful, sticky, delicious ways.

So here is some more food I have been interested in. Broccoli is one of my favorite vegetables so I felt quite privileged to shoot this lovely food. While I was shooting I remembered being a kid and how much I hated broccoli. The only way my parents could get me to eat it was to say that all the florets were trees, and I was the dinosaur coming to devour the forest. Yeah I was that kid, and yes Jurassic park is one of my favorite movies.

So seeing that its close to summer I feel strawberries are appropriate. I shot this a few months ago, but since I'm on a food kick recently I decided to add them to the collection. Besides I have to add some color to this blog, green is getting a little old.

I have recently found that food photography is more technical than one might think. I started looking at other photographers work with food and found it mostly was about the dish in its ready to eat, hot on the table, completeness. Which I understand because the whole point is to get your mouth watering and tummy growling, but every time I went grocery shopping I found myself enjoying the simplistic, funny, and beautiful side of food - The raw side of food. I have since then been trying to create situations for these foods that I feel fit their personality. I haven't had a lot of time to execute my ideas, but be assured there are more food portraits to come.
